Stanley's word:
The project started as a dream. I'm always fond of integrating different art forms with music as well as presenting intriguing new music to audience. While I was wondering what innovative program for my next recital, one night, I suddenly think of commissioning new piano music for each chapter of Alice in Wonderland and I soon realized that I can organize a visual art competition based on it. As a result, I can combine music, art and literature all at the same time! How amazing!!!
"Art is a journey into the most unknown thing of all - oneself. Nobody knows his own frontiers... I don't think I'd ever want to take a road if I knew where it led." ~ Louis Kahan
I always enjoy exploring and discovering new things which is fascinating! I thus sit in front of my computer and start selecting and asking composers for each chapter. Beside asking close composer-friend of mine, I also send messages to composers that I never have contacted before. I did a lot of research on that, checked out their website, listening to many of their works, I was totally amazed by what I found. The whole process is rewarding, unpredictable and opens a completely new horizon to me. Each conversation is unique----some respond quickly, some are very enthusiastic, some are slow, some even refer composers or artists to me.
I love the uncertainty and the endless possibilities within. No one knows what is going to be turn out, what kind of music will I receive and what is going to be for my world-premiere recital and what the prize-winning illustrations will be. Moreover, I can always think of new way to explore this timeless children book with other art form. How about a "mock" mad tea party with live piano performance of the new Alice pieces? How about an Alice souvenir cover design? The possibilities of this project is endless!
I can't wait to share with you all these 14 new piano works by the incredible array of composers. And I'm very grateful to all the composers participated who are writing voluntarily for this fundraising project, without their generosity and contribution, my dream is in vain. What it means to me is beyond words. I encourage every music lovers, artists, Alice FANS, art lovers, literature lovers, poets, musicians and anyone who is curious enough to come to the world-premiere art fusion concert in Hong Kong. Don't miss the world premiere concert on May 14 2016!!
